The conference will hear directly from people with a learning disability and / or autism, as well as relatives and supporters:
· Roy, the gentleman who has very kindly authorised us to use his image on the invite (please see attached), who will speak about his experience of the criminal justice system as a defendant. He also features in the photo exhibition by Polly Braden that is going to be shown at the conference: https://www.theguardian.com/society/2018/oct/27/one-hoax-phone-call-12-years-behind-bars-the-prisoners-with-learning-disabilities
· Andrew and Jason, Ambassadors for Stay Up Late, who will be speaking about their manifesto for an Ordinary Life and their use of human rights advocacy.
· Emma & Claire, relatives Ben, who was a resident at both Winterbourne View, and then Veilstone (Atlas Project). Ben was a complainant in two sets of NMC proceedings against a nurse at Winterbourne who punched him and broke his jaw. Emma & Claire will be speaking about their and Ben's experiences of the criminal and regulatory investigations.
· David and Jill, parents of James, who mistreated in an Assessment and Treatment Unit. They will speak about their experience of bringing a civil claim under the Human Rights Act and how they tried to fairly reflect James' experiences in the process.
· Andy and Amanda, parents of Colette, who had high functioning autism and died following multiple failures in her care - https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2019/mar/21/multiple-failures-care-autistic-woman-colette-mcculloch-hit-by-lorry-inquest-finds
The conference will include Norman Lamb MP as the keynote speaker, as well as a range of policy and legal experts who will discuss proposals for change. We are hoping for a very positive day that inspires momentum for change.
